Length varies significantly by contract type. A simple NDA is typically 500–1,500 words (2–5 pages). An employment agreement runs 1,500–3,000 words. A master service agreement or SaaS subscription agreement is typically 3,000–8,000 words. Commercial leases and partnership agreements can exceed 10,000 words. Anything unusually long warrants careful review — complexity is often used to obscure unfavourable terms.
Most legal contracts score between 10 and 30 on the Flesch reading ease scale — considered "very difficult" to "extremely difficult." Plain-language contracts score 40–60. Our complexity rating uses average sentence length as a proxy for readability: under 20 words per sentence is readable, 20–30 is typical legal, above 30 is complex, above 40 is unusually dense.
